Yet another true story

This was prompted by Handiman’s excellent posts. A long time ago, for my sins, I used to work for the Civil Service. Before that, I’d had a lot of really heavy manual labouring jobs. I was also a very keen sportsman and played competitive football every Saturday. Not surprisingly, I picked up quite a few injuries but, apart from a couple of twisted ankles, never let them curtail my activities. Well, one day in the office, I “twinged” a probably already weakened wrist when getting into my chair. Simply to provide support (so that I didn’t have to cancel tennis and squash games), I strapped the wrist up. The next day, the office manager saw my bandage and asked what had happened. Thinking nothing of it, I gave a dismissive reply. The upshot was that I had to go into her office so that we could have an “accident review”. Never having encountered one of these before, I could hardly believe it was happening. The final question was: “Now, what has this incident taught you.” Many replies came to mind! However, the one that had me in internal convulsions was: “I shall have to learn how to sit down more carefully.” The manager didn’t even smile and, fortunately enough, I was able to keep a straight face for as long as was necessary.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
