Rest Easy my brothers

There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me.
What in the world do leaping lords, French hens,
swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out
of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?

This week, I found out.
From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were
not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone
during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics.
It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning
plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each
element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality
which the children could remember.
-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.
-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness,
Gentleness, and Self Control.
-The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.
-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.
So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol...so pass it on if you wish.'
Merry (Twelve Days of) Christmas Everyone
CHRISTMAS AT ARLINGTON CEMETERY
I wonder why the press hasn't enlightened the public about it??
Arlington National Cemetery

Rest easy, sleep well my brothers.
Know the line has held, your job is done.
Rest easy, sleep well.
Others have taken up where you fell, the line has held.
Peace, peace, and farewell...

Readers may be interested to know that these wreaths -- some 5,000 -- are donated by the Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington,Maine. The owner, Merrill Worcester, not only provides the wreaths, but covers the trucking expense as well. He's done this since 1992. A wonderful guy. Also, most years, groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to DC with this event to help out. Making this even more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is in one the poorest parts of the state.

Wow ....

I never had any idea what that song meant rmcusnret ... but I sure do appreciate you taking the time to share the story with us. I think I knew that about the wreaths at Arlington Cemetary, but since you brought it up ... since I live outside of DC, I think it is time for a trip there to pay my respects.

Thanks again!!!

I did see a special about the wreaths and what a difference one man can make in thoughts and deeds. Your one man that can pick me up, say the right things and have such knowledge. Also know most words to the "oldies", lol.
Thank you for bringing some rich history to us all and sharing your wonderful personality with us. Merry Chirstmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family. Hugs, Spicii

tyvm 4 the knowledge rscusnret, I LOVE to learn new trivia . But u have hit a raw nerve with me, lol. I hate that song, i find it a BIT repetitive, lol. It's like the 1st time u hear it, u have heard it a dozen times already, lol. The Partridge especially annoys me, i'm not a big fan of birds or aviarites, ie. those that live in avaries (I doubt u've heard this word b4, that MAY be because i just made it up!! lol). Anyway, as i said I love to learn, so despite my disbelief in religion, could u please explain what the pear tree represents, is it society/communtity?? That would make sense subliminally , if the most repeated/mantrise (another word i MAY have just made up, it means relating to/ pertaining to a mantra) line of the song was saying jesus is "amongst us" (even though the sheer thought of that is ridiculous,I mean the person named Jesus died over 2000 yrs ago & if his mum was a virgin, well i guess that's what u would call Tiger Woods, if being a virgin was a secret code 4 having an affair on the side, ROFL). Absolutely no offence intended, just having fun mate, not a BIG FAN OF THAT SONG

i forgot something

I deeply respect all who attend the wreathe ceremony, it sounds like the anzac day dawn service in Australia & New Zealand. It is a very humbling experience to pay homage & respect to those that have lost their lives defending the freedom we all enjoy today. I thank them all!!

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
