Opinions on ranking system/ladder ranking

The ranking system on this site is very Wonky. There are players who aren’t .500 that are ranked 2400? I have no idea how the ladder rankings are calculated? I never seem to be in the top 500 and there’s roughly only 85-110 players on at one time. If anyone would like to chime in I’d appreciate it.

The thing about the ratings system is that is that it’s easy to artificially pad. When you you first make an account you gain 50points every time you win. If you start off by jumping to 1900 for example the. You only play players who have similar or higher rating you can make yourself look like a strong played even though your not. The best players are the ones who play for tickets.

Ladder and rating points are two entirely different things. There are hundreds of posts on the cribbage forum as well as backgammon forum. Or you can click on ladder and learn the rules. Most VIP players could care less about ratings points. As ZNWV points out, they can be manipulated and ultimately are not a measure of a player's ability. Play for fun. Play for Tix or play for Ladder position. Ignore rating points. You can review 20 years' worth of discussions about this topic on most of the forums.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!.
According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!). The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
