ELO rating system

Why do you use the ELO 'chess' rating system for backgammon? I really don't think it can reflect a players backgammon ability as it seems to take no account of clever use of the doubling cube. Surely the doubling cube is what makes backgammon a game of skill and use of it should be encouraged and reflected in the rating system. I realise this can be a complex issue but find I can't trust this ELO system as it currently appears to be applied.

Although ratings may be at times invalid, they were designed (by professor Elo many years ago) to serve as an indicator of performance. The title of Professor Elo's book was 'The Rating of Chessplayers, Past & Present.' The formula has been adapted by others to various games, such as Go, Backgammon, and Football, by adjusting the constant factor representing the variance of a game. (See, for example, http://www.cs.arizona.edu/-gary/backgammon/elo.html , or http://gobase.org/studying/articles/elo/ .)
The ratings are correlated with the win/loss record and depend on the strength (ratings) of opponents.

So, please clarify for me. In a match situation, do you apply the ELO analysis to each individual game within the match, or do you wait for the result at the end of the match and apply that to the ELO formula?

Rating results are calculated at the end of the match.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!.
According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!). The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
