I think this must be the new system to stop people frivolously taking a win, but I wish it could incorporate back games.. just now i was playing someone, using a back game.. I had a 5 point defence, and he rolled that would have forced him to open twice.. he ran the clock down waiting (not disconnecting just waiting), i waited for some of the extra minutes and then obviously went to take a win.. but it 'analysed' the end position and annuled the game.. ! also for those who take advantage of someone disconnecting, they can still take a win if their opponent is playing a back game..
end position analyzed ...

Starting May 25, 2004, at game termination, the position is analyzed by the world's strongest backgammon engine. The engine evaluates the chances to win the match for each player. If the player's chances to win are determined to be no greater than those of disconnected player, the game is annulled ($Ticket fees are refunded for $Ticket games)

In chess, a player who runs out of time loses (except in the case where there is not sufficiant mating material). Why is this not the case in backgammon?

Just like in chess when the time has expired but the other side has nothing to win with (insufficient mating material) here in backgammon if the remaining player has statistically insufficient chances to win, the game is annulled / fees refunded.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!.
According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!). The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
