Latency?

Could someone explain the impact of a high number and a low number regarding latency for myself and for my opponent? Does this affect the clock? My latency is usually much higher than those I play. I wonder if this has to do with my internet connection (DSL) or computer.

Thanks in advance.

High network latency may affect the clock.

For simple connection diagnostics, please take a look at http://www.gamecolony.com/speed.html

The best connectivity diagnostics from your side (showing both lost packets & lag) can be achieved with a shareware product VisualRoute available from VisualWare.com tracing to 64.95.65.130

As opposed to some other gaming servers, this site does not implement a simplistic Time-Seal because Time-Seal makes it quite easy for any computer-savvy cheater to manipulate and beat the system. Most DSL or cable connections are quite fast and reliable.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
