speed chess isn't much of a real test of skill. I think it is strictly getting used to moving fast so the other tiems out. I agree with other players that testing the skill takes some time. I lose agaisnt the best layers wether its 5 minutes or 10 but at least we have excellent thinking games. I lose to anyone if its a 2 or 3 minute game and isn't even a test of skill but a test of panic ability.

It's a different kind of game that simply adds the factor of speed to the overall outcome. Some like it hot, some can't handle it.

Yes, I agree with you Starforce. A chess game that's under 5 minutes changes from a thinking game to a reflex game. I just don't get it. I think twenty-five minutes is optimal.

Speed Chess requires different kind of smarts

Speed chess was the favorite of one of the greatest chess players of all time, a one time world chess champion M. Tahl. In addition to his victories in standard snail-speed-thinking chess, Tahl won a great many victories in world speed chess competitions.
Speed chess is, obviously, best suited for those who can think and react fast. In the days of non-personal remote Internet playing and computers, speed chess (-4 min games and less) is the only form of chess competition that can reasonably assure no external assistance

i think speed chess is great. obviously i enjoy the gruelling 4 hour chess matches in competitions but on the computer i just want a bit of fun.Skill is a big part in the 1min game and most of the time the better player wins with a checkmate or his opponent resigning.
play the game that suits you

I agree with the most of the replies. A 2 hour game is great and rewarding but for most lets be real, we just don't have the time to be on for 2-3 hours straight playing chess online. with 5-10 minute games you can stop after one or two. We all have kids, homework, pets, houses, work, etc to take care off that will not allow for playing 10 games every night if they took 1 hour each. Also, I have set games at 25 minutes and had my butt wipped in 2, but also had a guy who was obviously going to loose take 10 minutes to make one move. Now, about the technology. With high speed cable, I was part of a forum where often those who had a 25% winning percentage were starting 10-20 minute games with their latest version of chessmaster running in another screen and suddendly getting top ratings. Pleople actually stopped playing. With that said, there is skill in both speed and regular chess. Can you react to quick moves?, do you know all the 'trick' mate attemps', can you throw that guy off enough to win? And the last post is right, I played some 1 minute games and the game was over in 30 seconds with me running with my tail between my legs. Bottom line is if you don't like less-than 5 minute games, don't play them. Start a room with whatever you want and attract those who agree with your taste. enjoy this site!

in 5 mins games, time must be used properly to prepare for attacking or defending. so in this 5 mins (or less) games, means that no chess engine will work, that nowadays most chess engines required times to think 7 to 8 steps ahead. I think to ensure that there is no such assistance, 5 mins game can explain that the people playing those time is the real chess player.
speed chess and pushing

speed chess is really fun to play, when i play at gamecolony, most of times i always play 1 minute games and usually i'm pretty good at it. So far i had succeeded to have a maximum rating of 2372 and in average i have my rating higher than 2200. But it happens that i loose regurlaly to some players, actualy some of them doesn't even have the rating that i usualy have but still there are capable of wining the games. How can they do it? The answer to that question is quiet simple, some players have a basic strategy for wining which is to 'push' the other player to play without even taking time for thinking. Now,you can imagine what happens after that, the player that 'push' have a psychological control over the other one. I can tell you that this strategy really works. I have try to use it with some other players and the results are simply astonishing,i win more games than i usualy won and each time i got the other player totaly crushed. But still i have to complain about this attitude,it is not chess but just 'pushing'.

Not played 'clock' before but one of the great things about chess is how the game changes dependent on the time allowed to play. Those who think speed chess is a skilless race to the finish line are totally mistaken. You do however have to play quit a lot of chess before you can get anything out of speed chess especially 1 min games. I think in terms of progressing your game longer time spans are essential. However if you are feeling sharp and want to test your knowlege get stuck into a racier game.
I think the key skill in playing a shorter game is knowing when to think about a move and when to act on instinct. You need to know that certian patterns of play will lead to more benificial outcomes. These are things that you can respond to without thinking. However you also need to recognise the value of pausing for a moment to consider options at a crucial stage. This to me is the skill. I also don't think that a decent speed chess player needs to be influenced by another players attempt to beat the clock. I think players who say this are using it as an excuse for losing, Thats not to say it can't mess up your game if you allow yourself to be influenced by it.
In short speed chess is a fun way of testing your knowlege, if you want to improve your game then obviously you need time to think and in this case it's better to play slower games..

yes,you are quite right about most of the things that you've said. But if it has never happend to you to get victim by what i have describe earlier then i totaly understand your point of view. However i have been a victim of players that push you to play too quickly with out thinking. This can happen because some people who have good reflex tends to react more quickly. So,basicaly some players will take advantage of this by playing there moves at a moment that you dont expect them to. I mean, sometimes some players take a pause for few seconds during the game and then suddently at a moment you list expected it they play there moves. Well i can tell you when someone does this,it will happen sometimes that you wont even notice imediatly after, that he had make his move. I think that some players who are quiet good in the 'pushing technic' might understand pretty well what i'm talking about. And anyway, time is major issue specialy when you are playing 1 minutes games, you have to choose between calculating the moves that you will play and the quickness of your reply. It is quiet difficult to manage these two features of the game at the same time.

speed chess a different kind of chess. you must be very fast and you can't be stupid. you must realize your skills very fast. and this is a skill too. not everyone can play for example 1 min chess.

Speed chess is the main component in playing chess well. Think man, if u are low in time and u have to ponder something up really good. U know what I mean. 2 seconds later u can already think 5 or 10 moves ahead man. You should learn to play speed chess. It helps your chess game out!!

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!.
According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!). The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
