TOO TRUE!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning .. uphill both ways ... through year 'round blizzards ... carrying their younger siblings on their backs .. to their one-room schoolhouse, where they maintained a Straight-A average despite their full-time, after-school job at the local textile mill .. where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death!

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way I was going to lay that stuff on my kids ... about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But...

Now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, ! I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet ...we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves!

There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter .... with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

There were no MP3s or Napsters! You wanted music, you had to go to the record store ! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and mess it all up!

We didn't have fancy things like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your boss, your mom, a collections agent, you didn't know!!! You just had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Play station videogames with high- resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids' and the graphics left a little to be desired! Your guy was a little square! You had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win, the game just kept getting harder and faster until you died! ... Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there was no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height. If a tall guy sat in front of you and you couldn't see ...tough!

Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 20 channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! Forget channel surfing! You had to actually get up and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network!

You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning... D'ya hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK, believe it or not!!

We didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up .. we had to use the stove ... imagine that! If we wanted popcorn .. we had to use that stupid jiffy pop and shake it over the stove like an idiot forever.

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy.

You're spoiled, you guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980

Hi Peg,

There is much in what you say. However, it is probably also true that each and every generation has its own special “problems”. Many of these difficulties can be attributed to the “previous generation”… and so on ad infinitum. Widening the argument even further, perhaps all ills and woes can simply be attributed to the existence of the beast known as mankind. As also can many of the triumphs and joys.

When I was young, people didn’t always bother locking their front doors and children could be allowed to play outside till late at night. Of course, things were not perfect then and, perhaps, it only seems that, in this connection, things are even less perfect now. In the end, crabbily or cheerily, we all have to find our own answers.

Sure, it bugs the bejabers out of me when kids complain that “there’s nothing to do” or insist, for example, that they have to have branded trainers. What is the world coming to?! Well, it’s pretty much going where we let evolution take it. That is very much our own responsibility. Global warming, terrorism, intolerance… we can all sit back and throw our hands up in the air or, alternatively, exert our own particular influence to promote what we see as “positive development”.

Smiles and friendly words go a long way. They can also be contagious. Thus, when “brats” (of any age) start “whining” about the pressures of modern life, let’s give them a grin as we take them out to smell the roses. The scent won’t abate any of the ills, but maybe it will help us focus on the really important things in life. What are they? Well, I’m fairly sure that smiling is one of them, but that’s as far as my knowledge goes.

End of peroration. Forgive the indulgence – the soap box has now been banished to even further than the back of beyond.

Thank you Kaupanger

I truly enjoy your responses Kaupanger although I can't make claim to the post. I cleaned it up quite a bit before I could use it .. I guess some writers think the more profanity the funnier. I don't happen to agree, and it wouldn't be allowed anyhow because of the high standards of GameColony.

I agree wholeheartedly with what you say though and just wish I could express myself the way you do. I probably shouldn't admit this, but I had to look up the word 'peroration' Neat word!!

Hi Peg,

Seems we shall have to start a mutual admiration society. Only problem is that, apart from my intentions, there is nothing admirable about me!

As I’ve intimated before, I think your column is great. You do an excellent job with writing/editing/managing/etc. All power to your elbow as we say over here.

Best regards,
K

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
