What does the letter R mean when looking at a potential table to play at?

RATED VS. NON RATED GAMES

Hi 49_degrees_n. The R next to a table means that the game is NOT RATED. Meaning the players ratings will not be adjusted if you win or lose. Many players on the site play for high ratings. Other players prefer to play ladder towards prizes at the end of the month. Neither is better than the other (in my opinion), it just depends what your end goal is. Higher ladder vs. higher ratings. Tourneys are always set for ratings. The below is from our Help link (FAQ- Frequently Asked Questions): Rating Issues The rating system follows the published official formulas of USCF (United States Chess Federation) ELO calculation. If there is a significant difference in ratings, and the higher rated person wins, ratings may not change at all. New players start with the rating of 1400. There is a special formula for the first 20 games for provisional rating calculation. Provisional players can ramp up their rating faster. If you win against a provisional player, you may not see any increase in rating. Whichever you choose - have fun!!
